State eyes early release to ease prison crowding
About 200 of Maryland’s oldest and least violent inmates will have their files reviewed for possible early release to ease crowding. Inmates over 46 who have served 30 to 70 percent of their sentences may be considered. hearings are planned next year after recommendations to the Division of Corrections and parole commission. The crackdown notes that age is not a factor but mellowing with age lowers reoffense risk. Maryland’s system is the seventh most crowded in the U.S., housing over 20,000 inmates in facilities rated for 12,700.
