A convoy carrying 670 U S Marines and French Legionnaires departed Mogadishu for Baidoa in Somalia amid famine. U S special envoy Robert Oakley said they would reach the besieged town by Wednesday.
President-elect Clinton, at a two day economic conference in Little Rock, urged economists to propose specifics for a 100 day package while acknowledging a very tough choice on widening the federal deficit to boost a sluggish economy. Nobel laureate James Tobin urged creating 8 to 9 million jobs over four years.
Frederick County Commissioners approved 200000 to restore state budget cuts at the Health Department saving nine jobs through June 30 including three maternity clinic nurses an immunization program nurse a dental assistant a dental hygienist a clerical worker two sanitarians and a water and sewer inspector while 28 proposed layoffs were previously notified.
Delegate Nancy Kopp announced she is dropping her challenge to unseat R Clayton Mitchell Jr conceding her support faded. She cited vote counting as a speaker candidate and had drawn up to 50 unhappy delegates. Brice Poole called it relief noting potential damage to the House ahead of the 1993 legislature.
Urbana residents packed a hearing on the 20 year growth management plan part of Frederick County's rezoning effort. Critics argue the PUD northwest of Md 355 could add up to 3700 dwellings, turning southern Frederick County into Montgomery County, and that current land inventories suffice for 20 years. Residents urged preservation of farmland and questioned impacts on traffic, schools, and local character.

Frederick Community College leaders urged Western Maryland lawmakers to restore funding to the level proposed by the Maryland Higher Education Commission for fiscal 1994. The college seeks 2.93 million dollars in state support after losing 535 thousand this year, plus 257 thousand in July and 278 thousand from Social Security cuts.
At the Myersville post office a three-foot Christmas tree in the lobby was stolen Saturday afternoon. An ornament was left behind as witnesses saw a person leave in a car with the tree while a customer was nearby. The tree had decorated the lobby since early December and patrons noticed its absence.
