20 Children Die In Wreck
GREELEY Colo AP Twenty children died Thursday in a collision between a school bus and a fast train. Thirteen children were hospitalized and three released after treatment. Bus driver Duane Harms, 23, was questioned and treated for minor head cuts. Investigators cited hazy statements from the engineer and Harms. The City of Denver train, northbound from Chicago, struck the bus at a rural crossing in clear weather. No crossing signals flashed. The crash left the bus center split and bodies scattered along the right of way. The pupils were en route to Delta Elementary Meeker Junior High and Greeley High. The morgue at the National Guard armory in Greeley was crowded with grieving families and officers sought identifications. Residents recalled the tragedy as a local worst traffic accident. The nearby Della Elementary was closed for the day.
