Fidel Castro testified as star witness in a treason trial for Maj. Hubert Matos in Havana. The military prosecutor sought the death penalty for Matos after Castro argued the opposition arose from a plot to destabilize his regime. The restriction excludes NASA scientific launches and non military Atlas Thor Jupiter Polaris missiles.

Weddie claims crowding by an unidentified motorist and was charged with reckless driving after police investigation. Indictments involve prison guards at Florida State Prison in a separate federal case.
A Venezuelan colonel who had just arrived in New York confronted a subway worker in Manhattan and pressed a pistol to the man's stomach. He claimed to have enemies and was handed over to the Venezuelan consulate to resolve the tense incident. The gun remains at police headquarters.
ELKTON Md AP A 34 year old man Louis Wilmer was found guilty in Cecil County Circuit Court of offering to pay Sheriff Edgar Starit to run a numbers racket. Oliver Crampton 45 of Havre de Grace was convicted last October on a similar charge. Sentencing scheduled next week for both. The bribe offers allegedly occurred on March 3 6 and 12.

A prewinter snowstorm with strong winds hit New Mexico Texas and Oklahoma stranding motorists and closing highways. Blizzard conditions, 60 mph winds, and up to 10 inches of snow were reported in New Mexico with a two inch-plus snowfall in the Texas Panhandle. Western Washington faces its second major flood as warm storms melt snow and bring heavy rain.
One airman was found by helicopter in a snowbound area after bailing from a B52 during an aerial refueling incident. Captain William B. Harris of Middletown Pennsylvania was in good condition and helped in the search for the second missing navigator, 1st Lt. David B. Morris of Owosso Michigan. The flight commander remained aboard as the bomber and tanker landed safely at Westover Air Force Base in Massachusetts.
Reporters in Posadas Argentina say hundreds of Paraguayan rebels slip into Paraguay to join the Suernila campaign against President Alfredo Stroessner. Brazilian sources estimate about 1000 new rebels, with rebel spokesmen claiming an uprising of some 32 000 men though many have since been captured. Paraguayan officials say the Tevoli uprising was crushed within hours.
The AP reports that some star route carriers will still use horses boats toboggans skis and even a dogsled to reach remote corners for Christmas mail. Carrier Eulice H Thomas in Crisfield Maryland to Tangier Island Virginia uses a small boat while George Grosvenor on Lake Michigan islands also relies on water delivery.
