Thurmont Homeowners Win Cash In Holiday Lighting Contest

Thurmont residents celebrated a bright Christmas season as Mayor Terrence Best announced the 1968 lighting contest winners. Winners listed include Michael and Cathy Delauter, James and Cathy Garman, Steven and Marie Slifer, Daryl and Susan Smith, and Susan Toms among others. Some homes reported 5000 to 10000 lights, highlighting the town’s growing holiday display.

Heavy rain floods Frederick County roads forcing about twenty closures on Friday. By Saturday morning most southern routes reopened except Md 26 at Israeli Creek. A flood watch and flash flood warning were issued by the National Weather Service as 1.84 inches fell locally.

Frederick delegation selects new vice chairman Snodgrass

Derr and Snodgrass lead an eight member Frederick delegation vote without debate Thursday. Louie Snodgrass becomes vice chairman succeeding David Brinkley who notes the post started in 1995 with rotating one year terms. Snodgrass says a House of Delegates presence is needed for county sponsored bills while Brinkley recalls rare use of the vice chairman in the House.

House gutted by fire near Frederick city destroys family home

Fire destroyed a two story wood frame house at 9601 Masser Road early this morning. Owner Herb Parsley and his wife Diana reported discovering the blaze around 8 am as flames spread up an interior wall. Neighbors called 911 with Lewistown Walkersville Thurmont independent and Jumor fire companies responding. Firefighters said windows were venting flames as the home burned. The Parsleys and their three children, ages 6 9 and 12, will stay elsewhere with clothing and essentials in short supply.
