Maryland unemployment jumped in November with initial claims to a weekly average of 5,446, up 42.4 percent from October and 593.6 percent from November last year. Executive Director Robert B. Kimble noted industry slowdown across metals, textiles, apparel, construction, and transportation equipment, tied to temporary steel shortages and defense cuts. Total checks issued reached 73,387, down from October but up 96.7 percent from a year earlier, while cautioning the figures do not fully reflect unemployment levels. The report also mentions a centennial home furnace in Frederick and various local community notes.
