Exemption Granted for Fort Detrick Boiler Plant Operation
Fort Detrick gains a five year exemption from A 76 rules on boiler plant operation after Col. Mark Hoke requested exclusion. Army spokeswoman Marge Sherald said the exemption, extendable, covers 24 7 operation and preserves Army control of the facility tied to research and decontamination work for NCI projects. BENMOL Corp previously ran the plant until late April following incidents threatening research and environmental control of labs and greenhouses.

Fort Detrick boiler plant cited as critical to research
The base boiler plant is described as essential to disease control and decontamination of animal waste and research effluent. A failure could endanger pure research animal strains, with Fort Detrick operating at least 115 PSI, higher than normal 15-50 PSI, and two boilers kept on line for backup. Health Services Command in Texas backed the request and sent it to the Army. Potential losses include equipment and utilities if the boiler fails.
