A fire destroyed the old homestead of W. Smith near Urbana this morning. The chimney likely started the blaze, which consumed the house and many antiques. Water supply was scarce. firefighters saved few contents while valuables and money were lost. Mrs. Etchison and Smith resided there. Smith chairs a local committee in Frederick County.

In Rockville Maryland on December 19 the county issued 2805,000 road and courthouse bonds sold to Baltimore Trust Co. and Chase Security Co. for 6807,367.99. Clerk Bermy Clark and Dr. Benjamin C. Peerr oversaw an afternoon of work with George P. Henderson witnessing the closing. The bonds were the final issue among several authorized by the legislature for public works.

Dominican President Better After Hopkins Kidney Operation
President Horacio Vasquez of the Dominican Republic underwent a kidney operation at Johns Hopkins Hospital yesterday. He was reported to be doing very nicely this morning. The surgery by Dr. Hugh H. Young followed a long period of treatment at the hospital after a rapid flight from Santo Domingo to Baltimore. He entered Johns Hopkins with a high fever and had been under care for over a month, but his temperature has since returned to normal and his general condition improved.
