Oldest Eastern Shore dugout canoe found

Archaeologists on Maryland’s Eastern Shore believe a dugout canoe unearthed in La Trappe Creek near St. Michaels may date from 1600 to 1700, possibly crafted by an Indian or an English imitation. Curators note its even, light form lacks European gauge pins, aiding dating. A Trappe resident spotted the bow last October, with a formal dig organized by the museum and state historic groups.
