Gift of sound changes Kenny’s Christmas at Community Living
Kenny, a 44-year-old Frederick resident with developmental challenges, received a $600 Kiwanis Club donation enabling a voice synthesizer. Program coordinator Paul Broussard recorded his voice for Kenny, who now communicates via selectable prerecorded phrases. Kenny, previously mute since childhood, is learning to use the device while living under 24 hour staff supervision with two roommates at a Community Living house.

Way Station fund raising costly and Medicaid gaps
State auditors flagged Way Station fundraising as costly and found Medicaid payments posted before receipt. Corrections included nine day check deposits, single-person payroll handling, and cash deposits exceeding FDIC limits without collateral. Officials from the Health and Mental Hygiene Department are aiding fixes.
