State urges towns to draft minimum housing code
A Maryland state housing official urged mayors and town councils to begin plans for a statewide minimum housing code, with all municipalities required to conform or show plans to comply. The code, tied to the 1965 livability statute, mandates electricity heat ventilation and sanitation for tenant properties and allows waivers for hardship zones. Local enforcement and funding questions arose as the state offers a 200000 grant per year for two years to assist municipalities in drafting codes and identifying substandard housing.
