Guatemala Chooses Civilian Leader Cerezo in Runoff Win
Christian Democrat Vinicio Cerezo wins Guatemala's runoff presidential vote, becoming the first civilian leader in 19 years and aiming to reduce military influence, stabilize the economy, and pursue social reforms. Carpio concedes, observers note limited military handover. The new president will take office January 14 amid inflation near 50 percent and high unemployment.
