Indications say the current tax rate of 134 may stay unchanged for another year unless unexpected developments arise. Largest requests come from the Board of Education and Welfare Board with road funds seeking a boost.
London reports Britain informs the United Nations of surrender of the Palestine mandate on March 15 and proposes independent Arab and Jewish states by June 1 after a two week transition. The plan includes Arab and Jewish civic guards to maintain order while British troops withdraw from Tel Aviv Peith Tiqva and Ramat Gan.
Washington reports a compulsory re-examination for more than 135000 former officers retired for physical disabilities. An Army Navy personnel board urged periodic reviews and changing disability compensation to a percentage of actual disability, aligning with the Veterans Administration method for post retirement injuries.
In Baltimore the vault door at St Matthew’s Evangelical Church was breached through a wall cut in lath and tile. A hole large enough for a man was found in the pastors study veil, and about $300 was stolen. The incident follows a Dec 8 report of the theft.

The Interstate Commerce Commission authorized a 6.06 percent rise in first class fares west of the Mississippi and a 15 percent coach fare hike for the New Haven Railroad bringing the rate to 2.875 cents per mile. The moves align western and eastern schedules after last June and follow a prior 10 percent increase for eastern carriers. Americans in Romania faced intrusive searches by the secret police as U S diplomatic and military staff reported incidents. Senator Knowland said the actions violated diplomatic courtesy and he would raise the matter in the Senate. Incidents included home searches of a captain and others, a car with an American flag halted, and Ferguson detained at gunpoint.

He urges no parking on Patrick and Market streets, strict double parking enforcement, and relocation of some businesses to ease movement. Frederick police will distribute Christmas baskets to the poor again this year without fund solicitation from merchants. About 1200 dollars surplus from previous years is on hand, deposited in the bank, and will cover the effort. Names of those requesting baskets are being collected at Police Headquarters and checked with Social Service Exchange and the Salvation Army lists to avoid duplication.

Mufti Haj Amin El Husseini warned that the sword speaks and everything else must be silent as they coordinate with leaders from Saudi Arabia Trans Jordan Iran Lebanon Syria Egypt and Yemen. The Arab League aims for decisive action as the Lebanese army joins Arab forces on Palestine borders when the time comes.
A fast moving cold wave spread through the Midwest with forecasts of subzero readings in northern states by tomorrow. From zero to five below in Wisconsin and Iowa, to as low as 15 below in Minnesota, the pattern reached as far as the Texas panhandle with readings near freezing in parts. Pembina North Dakota logged 15 below, the coldest on today’s map as nations-wide, temperatures ran about normal.
