Eighteen Months for Bergdoll Kidnap Plot Accomplice
Corliss Heaven Griffis of Hamilton Ohio received eighteen months in prison for his role in the failed attempt to abduct Grover Cleveland Bergdoll, the draft evader, at Eberbach last August. Karl Sperber of Paris got fifteen months and Prince Faust Gagarin of Russia five months, while Eugene Victor Nelson of Chicago was freed. The case featured arguments over punishment and calls to end the “everlasting manhunt” as U.S. and German actions drew scrutiny. Griffis admitted $4000 funds from the graves registration service and noted his ties to the American Legion and military intelligence.
