Frederick County Faces Teacher Shortages Across Subjects
Frederick County schools struggle to attract minority and male teachers for elementary grades and special education, chemistry and physics. From September 1988 to last September 190 new teachers were hired, only 17 were black, with 90 elementary hires including five men. Resignations total about 140 staff from a 1800-strong professional corps, while mid year resignations persist amid daycare and salary pressures.
