Town weighs emergency water plan to conserve supply
Emmitsburg considers damming Tom's Creek and piping unfiltered water via the existing eight inch main to restore flow after the reservoir system. A pump could save about $3,000, with an emergency 500,000 gallon storage on standby. Mount St. Mary’s and St. Joseph’s would not need to close as students begin vacation December 17. The town uses 300,000 gallons daily, with Mount St. Mary’s consuming 100,000.

Maxwell cites nearby colleges and water plant capacity
Maxwell notes two nearby colleges bringing total population to about 4 650. The new plant filters 465 000 gallons daily from Rainbow Lake into a 500 000 gallon storage tank. Filtering runs when tank levels are low. Per capita use could reach 100 gallons daily before the limit. Normal country use is 65–70 gallons. Water travels from the storage tank to town through an eight inch and a ten inch main handling millions of gallons per day.
