Pearl Harbor Day and Subversive Act Action
On its twentieth anniversary Pearl Harbor Day is fading from memory yet its symbol war remains. Attorney General Robert F Kennedy moved to enforce the Subversive Activities Control Act, securing a 12 count indictment for failure to register the Communist Party of the United States as a tool of the Soviet Union. The court ordered party registration by December 1, with a maximum $10,000 per day penalty starting November 20. FBI reports show the party reorganized its leadership and cut records, while three officers Elizabeth Gurley Flynn Gus Hall and Benjamin Davis acknowledged by name face prison terms. The action aims to drive the party underground and could cripple it financially with fines and jail time for delinquent filings by December 20.
