Frederick in World War II A community’s home front memory
Frederick residents faced scarcity and fear while supporting troops. They collected scrap metal and rags, rationed sugar and meat, and tended victory gardens. Local schools, farmers, and the Liberty ship Barbara Fritchie linked town effort to the broader war. Children attended drills, air raid warnings sounded, and soldiers overseas sent back letters as the town kept up hope.

Memories of Pearl Harbor Echo Through Frederick Soldiers
Witnesses from Frederick recall the Sunday morning attack on Pearl Harbor. John H. Main, 72, served at Fort Armstrong in Hawaii as patrols tightened in darkness. Navy sailor Thomas C. Byrd aboard USS Nevada described the ship running aground and crew standing watch in cornfields. Dottie Stevens, longtime Frederick resident, described the shock of Japanese air raids near Honolulu and the scramble to reach home. Frederick’s Joseph Carroll, aboard USS Vestal tied to USS Arizona, recounted the Vestal’s battle and the captain's daring return to save the ship. Thirteen on the Vestal died and 73 were injured. Carroll honored the captain for saving lives.
