Headlocks in Dairy Herds Do Not Harm Milk Output
A Kansas State University trial comparing headlocks and neck rails in two freestall barns with 148 cows per unit found average dry matter intake and milk production nearly identical between treatments. Headlocks did not reduce milk yield, though improper installation can cause discomfort and reduced intake. Proper use minimizes restraint time and heat stress.
