Scrap Rubber Sent To China

U S. Senator O Connor of Maryland states that about 10 500 000 pounds of scrap rubber have been shipped to Red China since the Korean War began and calls for an immediate halt. He warns shipments rose after the outbreak and says even if used only for sandals it could enable Chinese soldiers to keep marching, and he intends to raise the issue before Congress.

Commerce Department readies full controls on shipments to China

A Senate Commerce Committee subcommittee member stated that the department plans to extend licensing controls to all goods bound for Communist China. Licenses would be required after midnight for any proposed shipments, expanding beyond the prior strategic list to enable an embargo mechanism. Nathan Ostroff, general counsel for the Office of International Trade, described the move as establishing enforcement machinery for a potential general embargo.

Scrap rubber shipments to Red China rise sharply

A government official testified that scrap rubber shipments to Red China increased from 263,000 pounds in July to 4,400,000 pounds, noting past lack of licensing due to perceived low strategic value. He said scrap rubber has long been sent to China for sandals and China has no facilities to convert it further. Senator O’Connor commented on the growing shipments and potential controls.
