More than 30 deer were slain by noon as the six day deer season opened in Frederick County. Observers predicted possible early totals near 64, with a high turnout of hunters in the woods. The season runs daily from sunrise to sunset through Saturday.
More than 800 Lutherans from 27 Frederick congregations gathered at Frederick High School for a two year Lutheran Evangelism Mission aimed at reclaiming lapsed members and inviting unchurched residents to join the church. Missioners will conduct services and lay visitation through Thursday, culminating Friday at 8 p.m. with Rev Gordon Folkemer of York, Pa, as speaker.
The AP reports six people died in West Virginia weekend accidents. Ohioan Marion Archer, 70, of Racine, drowned after her car left a ferry and plunged into the Ohio River near Bavenswood on Saturday. In Parkersburg, 9-year-old Roger Miller died in hospital after a car struck him while he ran to meet his father on Saturday.
London reports Britain and France will withdraw all troops from the Suez Canal area without delay and urge Israel to leave the Gaza Strip and Sinai. Dag Hammarskjold hopes the UN police will assume command in Port Said by mid December as talks on canal control proceed among Britain France and Egypt.

William S Knighten 72 of Bolivar West Virginia hanged himself in his jail cell after being arrested on an arsenic poisoning case involving Molly Kidwell and her family. The case links Knighten to the deaths of William Kidwell 42 and his two sons, Thomas 11 and Charles 2, following arsenic exposure at the Kidwell farm.
