Coal Shortage Hits Gary and Elwood Jobs
Eight thousand steel workers in Gary Indiana lost work as the American Sheet and Tin Plate Co shut down due to coal shortages. About five thousand at Elwood Indiana were also reported laid off for the same reason. Washington officials remained cautiously optimistic though coal production still lagged, about 40 percent of normal.
