China Awakening Theme Lecture Probes Modern China
A Chinese educator in Frederick discussed China’s 1900 to present revolts, reforms, and the Shantung issue. He described Boxer events, student protests, and public strikes, highlighting shifts in government, gender roles, and education. He compared Chinese and American systems and noted missionary influence, footbinding history, and cultural perceptions. The speaker, Hoetoh, a Taing-Hua University graduate, also spoke on Chop Suey origins and U.S. views of Chinese people.
