Ten Workmen Scalded in Reading Railroad Derrick Accident
Ten workers were injured when a derrick toppled during excavation under the Reading railway elevated tracks at Emerald street and Lehigh avenue in Philadelphia. Four men were badly scalded and in serious condition at Episcopal Hospital, while six others were treated and sent home. Thirty-five workers were present in the 100 foot wide trench when the derrick fell, overturning a boiler and showering scalding water and steam. No explosion occurred. Police and patrol wagons transported the injured. one laborer alerted authorities. The cause of the derrick toppling remains unexplained.
