Madison Square Garden will host a two week fashion show opening tonight with brief addresses from Acting Mayor Fornes and other officials. European and American designers display 160 gowns, plus a silk loom, millinery, hairdressing, and styles for outdoor and formal wear.
In St Petersburg on August 31 an imperial rescript names M Witte president of the committee of ministers and assigns him to press the Russo German commercial treaty while directing the finance ministry. The Official Messenger announces M Pleske as minister of finance amid Witte’s resignation and strategic shift toward Plehve interests.
General A W Greely chief signal officer arrives from Berlin to report on wireless telegraphy to Secretary Hay. The congress aims to formulate international rules for control and the report is considered scientifically important and likely to be made public soon.
Sofia dispatch reports Adrianople partly in ashes with sections burning and barracks exploded. Turks accused of wholesale massacres as inhabitants panic. Rebels push across the region, with Albanian pillaging, railways torn up, and Black Sea coast districts seized. Macedonian unrest spreads through Salonica Monastir and Edirne districts as new outbreaks and troop morale sag.
Miss Carolyn Wells, noted for humorous books, writes prose and verse. She ranks among the era’s best humorous poets with a new work titled Abenth Caldwell, created in collaboration with artist Oliver Sheiford.
The speaker says Greece will support Turkey in suppressing the Macedonian insurrection and urges a Greek Turkish accord to curb pan-Slavist or pan-Germanic influence. He notes Greece Albania and Italy must unite with Turkey for safety and cites Boris Sarafoff seeking aid for the insurrection, which he cannot approve due to Austro-Russian intervention interests.

Caleb Powers formerly Kentucky secretary of state was convicted anew for the murder of Governor Goebel in Georgetown Kentucky. He was sentenced to death with November 25 set as the execution date after a judge overruled a motion for a new trial. Powers vowed to appeal again as he maintained his innocence amid courtroom scrutiny and media attention.
In Chicago early morning, two thieves shot dead two workers and wounded two others at Gift and State streets, securing $3000 from the cashier’s desk after overpowering staff. Three suspects were arrested later, unnamed. The dead are Frank Stewart and B. Johnson. wounded are William Edmond and Henry Biehl.
Pittsburg August 31 1926 Frank Buchanan president of the International Bridge and Structural Iron Workers says six major structural trades plan a national building trades council of about 600000 workers. Smaller trades such as granite cutters marble polishers stone cutters would be absorbed. An Indianapolis meeting on October 7 will organize with national officers from six unions. The plan seeks to largely abolish strikes by not endorsing or permitting strikes without general approval.
