Auto Jumps Ditch and Tears Through Fence Near Braddock
A large six cylinder Hudson touring car plunged from State Road at Brad dock near Col. E Austin Baughman’s residence. The lone occupant escaped injury after tearing through a post and rail fence and a wire fence, traversing a two feet by three to four feet ditch, and resuming toward Hagerstown. Witnesses on the Col. Baughman porch reported the car’s speed around 25 to 40 mph after a heavy rain. The driver’s identity is unknown but the car likely originated from Baltimore. The crash left only a bent bumper as damage. Captain John Schley of Indianapolis has been named superintendent of the Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument in Indianapolis. He was born in Frederick and is a cousin of Admiral Winfield Scott Schley. He joined the Eleventh Indiana Regiment for a three month service, then enlisted for three years in the Fourth Michigan, rising to sergeant. He has since resided in Indianapolis.
