Fire devastates hotel block in Shelby and bank relocates
Dr. Hudson learns of the deadly hotel fire that swept a square of Shelby and caused the bank to move to temporary quarters across the street. The wreck originated in a rear room, destroyed the hotel, drug store, and department store, killing several and injuring others. Local residents including Miss Eskridge and Zeb Blanton’s family were tied to the events, with the bank preparing a new building on the site. Shelby, a 13 000 to 14 000 population city in Cleveland County, remains a cotton center with many relatives of Dr. Hudson resident there.
