Splash erosion and cover effects on soil loss
Rainfall and runoff detach and transport soil with splash erosion diminishing under cover. Bare soil splashes lift 1 to 100 tons per acre per rain, moving particles up to 5 feet horizontally and over 2 feet high, while fine silt and clay erode leaving sand. Crops like hay reduce loss. mature corn provides canopy. Contact local soil conservation districts for details.
