Highland Street bridge gains preliminary approval for rebuild
Federal and state highway officials authorize planning for a $450,000 permanent Highland Street bridge over Carroll Creek. City to fund 10 percent. 90 percent from federal and state sources. City engineers plan to hire Wilson T. Ballard as architect. The old bridge was closed in 1974 after rusted steel and undermined abutments. A temporary 3 ton crossing remains in place as funding discussions continue with the Federal Regional Council and other projects, including East and South Streets and Shookstown Road.
