Washington reports indicate the Nixon administration is weighing the release of frozen wage hikes as a response to labor complaints and Japan’s yen float. Labor officials say many negotiated increases could be released, with a final decision expected in due time.
Frederick craftsman Austin Steinhaus, a 30 year self employed restorer, will start mid September to train Goodwill Industries of Monocacy Valley workers. He will teach and supervise contractors, work on Goodwill furniture, and bring hands on expertise from restoring chairs, carriages, and desks for local historic sites. He has no formal art education and learned by visiting shows and museums.
The Emmitsburg Public School PTA forms an advisory panel with Bushney and Burrey architects to plan remodeling of Emmitsburg Middle School. Members include Sheila Charles Kenneth Fields Eric Glass Gail Graff Clarence Hahn Donald Higgens Eugene Myers Philip Topper Elsie Wivell Robert Wentworth Harry Scott Fred Stambaugh and Sister Mary Magdalen. The first meeting is set for 7 30 p m September 1 with Board of Education representatives.
Tropical storm Doria moved northward packing up to 70 mph winds and five inches of rain over Maryland Delaware and New Jersey with heavier totals in Dorchester County Maryland. Flooding delayed Maryland meetings and flooded Ocean City Convention Hall while officials reported mostly minor damage and no fatalities.
Maryland Attorney General Francis Burch affirms that the state ban on lotteries extends to all forms of lotteries whether for public or private gain. The ruling cites a 1935 opinion and an 1841 court decision, noting a constitutional amendment failed in 1971 and last faced voters in 1938.
Winton Blount announced overnight delivery for most local first class mail deposited by 5 p.m. by Sept. 9. Regions will identify areas with ZIP coded mail eligible for next day delivery and post notices at shopping centers and stations. Targets include 95 percent performance by Oct. 31 with monitoring and broader area expansions.
Frederick County pilot C. C. Cannon of Air Enterprises Inc sprays corn fields for Miller Chemical to combat blight. He flies low at 90 to 95 mph, in contact with a truck radio, and avoids densely populated areas. Neighbors reported a plane aloft and even a firey spray plume, but Cannon insists no accident or danger occurred and that the operation serves farmers' needs.
A 15 year old girl from Frederick was assaulted Friday morning by three men who allegedly took her from a party toward the mountains and sexually assaulted her before leaving her at a friend’s home. Police said names will not be released until arrest. An investigation continues. In a separate case Paul Dewitt Green, 23, of Frederick, was treated for a gunshot wound to the left knee from a family dispute on Md 26 at Ceresville. Charges pending.
Emmitsburg officials seek state aid and local funds to develop a town park with an estimated total cost near 100000. Residents will need about 25000 in local raising to qualify for state assistance. The town reviews Pax ton Builders Inc mobile home park and annexation of adjacent land with water and sewer needs. An attorney is hired to advise on the plan. The Silver Fancy Garden Club promotes beautification by litter removal and flower planting in window boxes and planters.
Sgt. James William Stockman age 58 of West Patrick Street a member of the Frederick City Police Department is reported in critical condition at Frederick Memorial Hospital after suffering a heart attack last night around 9 p.m.
