Seizure of mines rattles miners in ongoing dispute
Harding threatens to seize the anthracite mines but miners insist on a concrete plan. Workers demand the wage scale renewal to 1924 and reject old contracts or arbitration. Union leaders warn that government seizure without clear settlement won’t win back 135,000 strikers. A fact finding panel may probe both sides including UMWA finances. In a separate note a mine superintendent dies from septic infection after a hammer incident.
