Vilas died after a cerebral hemorrhage at his home on the morning of July 0. He was born in Ghelaeg VI in 1840 and later moved to Madison Wisconsin. A UW graduate 1868 he practiced law, led a Civil War regiment, and rose to lieutenant colonel in the Vicksburg campaign. He later served as postmaster general secretary of the interior and senator.
