Cresceus Sets Mile Record With Pace Vehicle Aid

Cresceus ran a mile on a half mile track in 2.0853 at Dayton Ohio to set a world record for the distance paced by Mike the Tramp and a steam automobile driven by Denzer. Dr A Scott Ives of Montreal assisted as the trainer and the run used pacing to claim the new mark over the prior 2.09% record.

Germany eyes Fernando Po island purchase

Major Curt Morgen, writing in the Colonial Gazette, says Germany has begun steps to acquire Fernando Po should Spain sell it, warning Britain would exploit the island to pressure Germany. The piece ties control of Fernando Po to West Africa interests and calls for German capital to push economic gains. Berlin reports Captain S. Clyde yachting scene in Glasgow plans international cup

La Rita Wins First Race For Lipton Cup at Chicago

In a 20 knot breeze La Rita representing the Chicago Yacht Club won the opening Lipton Cup race on Lake Michigan. Sprite finished second, Hoosier third, Little Shamrock fourth, Pilot fifth, Gutlaw sixth. La Rita’s time 2 hours 10 minutes 50 seconds over a triangular six mile course.

Georgetown Kentucky August 28 Caleb Powers addressed a packed Scott county courthouse for two hours defending his innocence and seeking acquittal after a prior 3 hour 50 minute session in which Attorney T C Campbell argued for the death penalty. Miss Mary Tyler Sturgis a known St Paul society figure will become a nun at Georgetown convent in Washington DC taking vows as a novitiate. She is daughter of General S D Sturgis a Civil War hero and sister of Colonel Samuel Sturgis with another brother Lille serving with General Custer.

Consul Assassination Prompts Demands of Turkey

Washington Aug 23 prompt action by the United States to punish those implicated in the killing of United States Vice Consul William Magelssen at Beirut Syria last Sunday. Minister Leishman reports the murder and the European Squadron has been ordered to Beirut to back U.S. demands if needed.
