An old advertisement extols Paine's Celery Compound as a cure for summer dyspepsia and indigestion. It claims to banish dyspepsia’s evils, calm stomach nerves, cleanse the blood, and restore strength. A testimonial from Fred Rosa of Clarendon asserts rapid recovery after two doses.
The Pullman family gathers at Castle Rest on the St. Lawrence in the Thousand Islands for a summer season close reunion. Nearly all surviving members of the parlor car magnate family are present at the scenic home built on a island retreat.
Station agent McDermott for the Boston and Maine Railroad at Goff's Falls was assaulted yesterday morning by a man who stole 3700 in payroll funds sent by American Express. McDermott was badly hurt and the robber escaped across the river into the Bedford woods.
President Theodore Roosevelt visited Maine on a hunting trip, eating muskrat with his old guide Bill Sewall and dining with Gov. and Senator Hale. He spoke at the Fair Grounds in Bangor, toured Augusta and Waterville, and urged crowd control for women and children. He then moved on to Nashua, New Hampshire for further engagements. Also: Harrisburg board plans rebuilding 21 flood-damaged bridges, with specifications and bids to Sept 23.
In broad daylight in New York harbor the liner Liguria and the freighter Peconic collided. The Peconic’s bow struck Liguria, causing hull damage but no lives lost. Captain Montana and crew evacuated passengers safely. no casualties aboard either ship. The Liguria carried over 1,100 people including Father Rodriguez and a large steerage contingent. The Peconic required repairs and returned to port.
Four girls from Connecticut and New York drowned at Pearce Lake near Pawling after getting beyond their depth. Anna and Susan Beach of Danbury and Stella and Martha Duncan of Pawling were visiting the Duncan home. Bodies recovered.
The new member of the supreme court is a son of the famous poet. He is sixty one years old Justice Holmes served as a captain of Union volunteers in the civil war and has been a judge of the supreme court of Massachusetts for several years. The report also notes a tragic double shooting case in New York and London reaction to President Roosevelt speech on trusts.
In Red Ash near Thurmond West Virginia on August 28, 40 families refused to vacate Red Ash Coal Company houses. As deputies removed belongings shots were fired across the river with about 800 rounds exchanged. No injuries reported on the Red Ash side while deputies surrounded the shooters and new workers moved in. Also reported American generals Corbin Young and Wood to be presented to Kaiser in Berlin with a gala opera invite.
Washington reports a series of earthquakes in Mindanao near Camp Vickers resulting in twenty Moro deaths from collapsing structures. American troops nearby were unharmed. The tremors near Lake Lanao caused mountain and stream disturbances and property damage, with no change in American force status at Camp Vickers.
Milwaukee April 2 120000 Brotherhood of Locomotive Trainmen members plan wage rises by September threatening a 20 percent increase and a $4 000 000 monthly rail payroll rise or a nationwide strike surpassing all prior actions. Washington August 28 Secretary Shaw says no financial alarm in circles and declines to discuss the situation.
Gov Stone orders reinforcements as Major Gearhart reports swelling unrest in Panther Creek Valley. Philadelphia Troop and Twelfth Regiment arrive to back Shenandoah guards. Strikers clash with nonunion workers, Mary Markley assaulted by about 100 women. martial law feared if violence continues.
Shenandoah Pa Aug 28 A detachment of soldiers halted a looming clash at Cambridge colliery after three men including nonunion worker Quinn were attacked by strikers. Two friends defended him with revolvers until Provost Marshal Farquhar arrived with troops. Joseph Petrovich was arrested, held on $500 bail after a hearing.
A conference of the People's Alliance executive committee from Girardville Hazleton Mahanoy City Shenandoah and other coal towns met to circulate petitions among Pennsylvania business leaders urging the governor to convene an extra legislative session to pass a compulsory arbitration law. The Alliance says over half of Pennsylvania’s citizens can be enlisted within a week to ten days.
