Country fairs and blue ribbon specials
Early county fairs focused on agriculture with dairy cows homemaking displays and recipe tastings. The first fairs emerged in New Jersey and New York in 1641 and 1810 with Elkanah Watson’s Berkshire cattle show. Grand Champion ribbons signaled months of prep as cooks showcased pies muffins breads and regional treats, with recipes and rules detailed in the Farm Journal’s Country Fair Cookbook.
