Extend Solicitation For March Of Dimes
The Frederick Civitan Club at its Francis Scott Key Hotel dinner last night voted to extend street solicitation for Emergency March of Dimes funds through Friday September 3. President LeRoy Blumenauer announced the first Friday drive raised over 160 dollars. Solicitors on Church and Patrick streets handed out balloons to draw attention and attract doctors. They were ramed out on Saturday. The club received invites to Ladies Night at Mt. Vernon on August 30 and to a miniature golf tournament hosted by the Silver Spring Civitans on September 2. Resignation of George Cruttenden was accepted as his business takes him out of town on meeting night. John Sausser was considered for the attendance prize but ineligible for lacking a pin. The president and Mrs Blumenauer, along with Mr and Mrs Basil Lewis and Mr G L Thomas, attended the Kenwood Club district meeting. David D. Oland joined on Sunday. The Fredeneck club earned second place with an 84 percent quarterly attendance. A plaque outlining the club’s accomplishments, created by Wendall Duff, was shown. Duff is the Hyattsville Club member and son-in-law of Mr. Lewis, which presented during Operation Surprise when Civitan groups visited Frederick. The first power producing public utility was built in New York City in 1882.

Leaves From a touring notebook What is the charm of San Francisco
HAL BOYLE explores why San Francisco captivates residents and visitors. Readers describe the city as an individual, tolerant, vital and unpredictable, with equal rights for pedestrians and a blend of past charm and forward motion. The piece contrasts the city’s lively present with its historic past and notes how growth has touched but not swallowed the core.
