Early morning sirens woke OCD officials and residents as Army Third Service Command conducted a surprise test in Baltimore and Salisbury. Lights burned unattended on porches drew city warnings while a fatality marked a statewide drill. Residents praised the practice for readiness though some missed contacts and some control centers went unmanned.
A three motor Junkers plane on a Santos Dumont Airport takeoff struck the Naval Academy building in fog and exploded, killing 18 of 21 aboard including Archbishop Gaspar Afonseca Esilva. One winged crash left part of the craft in the harbor. Casper Libero, publisher of A Gazeta, among the dead. Three injured. No U.S. citizens aboard.
American medium bombers escorted by fighter squadrons attacked Poix airfield in northern France today in daylight operations against Nazi concentrations. The raid began at 8 a.m. across the Kent coast, with RAF mines and naval surface ships damaging four German minessweepers in the Channel. The night prior marked the third anniversary of London’s first major German raid, while Berlin faced bombardment and evacuations as government offices reportedly moved to occupied territory.
In Maryland several counties failed to participate in an early air raid alert. Cumberland center mistook the code word and signaled only light tests. Arthur B. Gibson investigated the center and confirmed the misreading. The state-wide test began at 5 15 am and ended at daybreak with no incidents reported.
New York, Aug 27 At least 10 German U-boats were sunk or damaged in 13 air sea battles as US Army Air Forces B 24 bombers patrolled far out to sea. Five subs were sunk five damaged and three forced under water. Five crew members were wounded in one plane but the crew landed safely.
Norman Armour, ambassador to Buenos Aires and veteran diplomat, leads as the likely successor to undersecretary Sumner Welles if a vacancy arises. Breckinridge Long backs him, but greater diplomatic experience may win. Armour, in Washington for consultations, is popular and well connected, with a background in Europe and the Americas.
Berlin reports quote German Foreign Office members saying Roosevelt’s Ottawa speech offers no advantage to Germany and hints surrender would be preferable for them now. A Swedish correspondent notes Berlin’s cautious reaction to wartime diplomacy and press coverage.
The Swedish Foreign Office said a protest to Germany is being drafted after two German minesweepers sank two Swedish fishing boats without warning. Twelve crewmen were missing from the attacked boats in international waters near Denmark, as Sweden repeats demands Germany halt attacks on its maritime interests. A second protest in 10 days follows a prior Aug 18 note and Aug 6 coast guard incident. The Turkish motor vessel Dylmani was sunk by an unidentified submarine near the Dardanelles, as reported by The Associated Press.

A spokesman for the Italian legation in Lisbon denied reports that Dino Grandi, the former Italian ambassador to Britain, had arrived in the Portuguese capital to negotiate an armistice. The denial clarifies no peace talks were underway.
Nineteen teen German prisoners fled Fort Henry prison camp in Kingston Ontario last night between 9 and 9 30 pm. Four were recaptured by this morning as police and military units conducted searches from Dead Man's Bay to Barriefield. The escape marks Canada’s second large war prison breakout, following a 1941 April escape in northwestern Ontario.
