Norbert Love recalls Ezra Meeker’s eastward trek in a prairie schooner to honor Oregon Trail pioneers. Meeker seeks national highway status, retracing the 1852 route with oxen and a wagon bed boat, visiting Washington towns, noting changes, and urging public support for the project while reflecting on western history and figures like Webster, Linn, and Benton.
Ezra Meeker aged seventy six completes a historic ox team trek from the Pacific Northwest to the east along the Oregon trail. Along the route he erects markers and monuments assisted by schoolchildren who donate funds. He regards himself as seventy six years young and continues to preserve the trail.

Oren Root, brother of Secretary of State Elihu Root and longtime Hawkinson College professor, died at his Clinton home after a year of illness. Born May 8 1838 in Syracuse, he studied at Hamilton College, taught English at Missouri, became a minister, led Pritchett Institute at Glasgow, and returned to Hamilton in 1880. He leaves a wife and five children, including Edwin B., a New York lawyer, and Oren Jr., VP of Metropolitan Railroad, plus two daughters.
Trenton Aug 27 Governor Stokes denied any truth to a story claiming he aided a compact to select anti Roosevelt delegates. He called the statements absolutely false and said he was not aware of any move by prominent party men. He added his last talk with the president was mutually satisfactory.

Charles Andrews of South Bend Tod shot and killed his wife in a Chicago hotel then killed himself. The 11th annual American Osteopathic Association convention was held at Jamestown Exposition. William W. Schuyler, longtime Northampton County judge, died at Easton aged 79. The comptroller of the currency issued a call for banks' August 22 condition statements. An explosion at George Sherer & Co. hardware in Cedar Falls caused $116,000 in damage.
George Schuman, South Bethlehem police, was shot three times by William Jones, a southern negro, on the Philadelphia & Reading railroad tracks. Despite fatal wounds, Schuman identified the assailant before dying ten minutes later. A mob formed. Jones was quickly moved to Easton jail to avert a lynching, with Chief Kelley firing to disperse the crowd.
Charles Howey a 46 year old prosperous farmer in Phillipsburg New Jersey shot and killed himself after being arrested and confessing to assaulting two young children Howey had been jailed briefly but posted bail and returned home to brood over his disgrace He used a string on a shotgun trigger to end his life and died from the gunshot wound Local residents described him as a solid citizen with no prior trouble
Miss Agnes Maguire a Brooklyn school teacher vacationing at Noland Point Lake Hopatcong vanished on a Saturday night. Her cousin Charles Maguire left her briefly in a buggy near Camp Locy and returned to find her missing. Large search parties scoured woods and lake but no trace was found.
Lancaster, Aug 27. Sheriff Ziegler read warrants to Anthony Delero Stephen Carll Joseph Celione and Sivereo Rondell the four Italians sentenced to be hanged on Oct 3 for the murder of Plato Albanese at Gap. Rodelli dropped to his knees in prayer during the reading. In Bernardsville N J Aug 27 ghouls disturbed the grave of Margeret Kuhlewind killed in an automobile accident removing parts from the body. Authorities promise capture of the criminals.
