County rejects end to hiring freeze in face of state cuts

County commissioners on Tuesday rejected calls to end the hiring freeze citing a looming $125 million to $150 million state cut. Budget officer Mark Sweadner urged maintaining the freeze, noting last year’s savings and reduced flexibility as departmental budgets run 11 percent below last year. The panel also moved toward a hiring freeze review committee while advancing a space study for the C Burr Artz library expansion, with $2.1 million construction funding pending and CIP competition influenced by Urbana High School funding. September designated as voter registration month with Oct 5 deadline.

Schaefer vows cuts in state aid for programs

Maryland Governor William Donald Schaefer pledged to balance a about 500 million deficit by cutting funding to local governments and state programs. He warned pain ahead for health education and public safety, naming Montgomery and Prince George's counties as targets. He said next week will outline specific reductions and a Sept 15 board review will finalize. The plan relies on state agencies bearing the brunt as tax increases are rejected.
