Paris Aug 26 reports say British forces near the Gallipoli front have breached Turkish trenches and captured ground while aviators sink a large Turkish transport. Russian airmen bombarded outskirts of Constantinople causing casualties and panic among residents.
British sailors at the Dardanelles intercepted a torpedo fired by German forces. The device exploded not, causing no reported damage. The incident underscores naval tensions in the theater as Allied and Central powers contest control of sea lanes.
Rome reports nearly 14 000 Armenian Christians were killed in Trebizond during a massacre authorized by a June 24 decree. Giacomo Gorrini, former Trebizond consul, described boats capsizing in the Black Sea, thousands of women forced to convert, and widespread horror from June 24 to July 23.
Governor Brumbaugh of Pennsylvania and 100 aides survive a near disaster when their high speed train stops to avoid a stalled automobile truck near Omaha. Four hours needed to replace wheels after the sudden stop. A separate item reports Mary Lancona 55 killed by a jitney in Eat ing, Pa, and her son John Lancona 5 injured. An aviator test jump in London ends in a fatality.
Berlin reports heavy fighting southwest of Brest-Litovsk with large prisoner captures as German forces push Russian positions eastward. Ossowiec fortress surrenders after a year of defense, while Bialystok remains partly in Russian hands and Austro-German forces press Brest-Litovsk approaches. Mrs William L Shuffler of Baltimore visits her mother in law on Enat Church Street.
