Washington reports the Weather Bureau avoided a shutdown of 67 field stations after a Senate payroll increase. Local groups press to keep the airport station open for aviation and agricultural needs, citing forecast and daily weather calls. The move followed prior closures and temporary reopenings, with community groups preparing a unified appeal.
The eastern part of the country will not see hot weather for several days as a large high pressure area over southern Canada keeps temperatures cool. Tonight should be cool with a low around 51, four degrees warmer than the previous night, while highs near 74 yesterday give way to the low eighties by Sunday afternoon. By Monday southerly winds are expected to bring warmth and continued fair conditions.
The Defense Department identified six additional U S casualties from the Korean War in List No 383. One is killed one is dead of wounds and four are wounded.
In southwest Baltimore an automobile veered into a streetcar early today killing 32 year old passenger Mrs Francis H Rene and injuring four others. Driver Walter Preston Hicks 31 in critical condition faces manslaughter reckless driving and wrong side charges if he recovers. No streetcar passengers were hurt. The car was demolished.
The Senate passed a 1.045 billion money bill totaling 85 million for the Voice of America and related activities after a Republican led effort to restore cuts. The measure, approved 52 to 16, funds the State Justice and Commerce departments and Federal judiciary for the current fiscal year, with stop gap financing until law. Senator Douglas pushed economy but failed to reduce spending. McCarran urged censorship while Benton warned against curtailing a free press.
At Fort Bragg North Carolina six thousand paratroopers of the 82nd Airborne Division prepared to jump in a combined air ground attack to drive invaders from North Carolina during 12 days of war games. Medical units stood by as the Army and Air Force clashed openly over tactical air power at the Army level in the ongoing dispute.
A seven year old boy confessed to Lt. Bartgis and Officer Bell that he started a blaze with matches and paper at the rear of 107 Water Street Thursday evening. The shed was totally destroyed. Mrs. Breckenridge tenant says no loss and demolition was planned. Twenty chickens in an adjacent shed were saved by firefighters.
A Hagerstown motorist alleged to have exceeded the 70 mile per hour limit on Route 1 40 A chose to forfeit $100 to Peoples Court rather than stand trial before Magistrate Wilbur F Sheffield. Leroy C Martz was arrested August 17 by Trooper K H Tichnell and charged with speeding and reckless driving. He paid $10 on the reckless driving charge. An arrest about three this morning preceded the forfeiture. A county motorist took a 30 day jail term in lieu of a $50 fine imposed by Magistrate Sheffield Friday.
A three car frame and sheet metal garage in Liberty was burned early this morning. A new model Dodge purchased this week and stock were damaged. only the car was removed before further harm. Firemen from Union Bridge responded to the blaze at about three o'clock. No damage estimates were available.

Tehran Aug. 25 Iran ian foes of Premier Mohammed Mossadegh speak up again after Britain oil talks collapsed for a second time. Elections loom this fall with a parliamentary battle feared as Mossadegh clings to oil nationalization despite economic strain. Opponents from merchants to lawmakers warn of gains by the National Front if he dominates the ballot.
Baltimore, Aug. 25 Five Communists jailed after an FBI roundup have appealed for bail relief and say they face indignities and persecution. The group includes Philip Feldfeld and his wife Regina, George Myers, Leroy Wood, and Dorothy Blumberg, charged with plotting to overthrow the government by force. Maurice Braverman, a party attorney, was released on bail. Feldfeld’s bail was cut from 100000 to 30000. the five request at least 10000 bail.
LeRoy D. Rothergill an 18 year old Mr Pleasant youth who was sentenced to a year in the Maryland House of Correction was released from custody on Friday on $1,000 bond after an appeal was taken. Robert T. Dutrow of the 900 block of North Market Street was also released from jail after an appeal was taken in the drunken driving case. Bond was set at $1,000 for Dutrow who received a 60 day jail term plus a $150 fine.
A deed was recorded in the Clerk's office transferring property in Brunswick with improvements from Mr and Mrs Damon L Barnhart to Mr and Mrs Clarence A Strickler. Consideration was about 5000 dollars according to the revenue atampa.
Washington Aug 25 Senate Investigations subcommittee ordered a full investigation of Reconstruction Finance Corporation loans to American Lithofold of St Louis and possible ties to William M Boyle Jr Democratic National chairman. Hearings likely in September will call Boyle and government officials to testify, with no prejudgment intended.
Lancet reports two Belfast children, Jackie and Maureen, with a rare blood pigment disorder who darkened blue after cabbage meals. After doctors treated them with ascorbic acid tablets, they returned to pink within 30 minutes. Regular tablets needed to stay pink. only 18 cases in records.
Maryland OPS will send special teams to cities statewide to aid businessmen and consumers with OPS problems. Director Hugh R. Hoffman says each principal city will be visited for a full day every two weeks on the same weekday. Next week's schedule lists Frederick on Tuesday at Hotel Frederick.
The United States reviews a fourth Russia lend-lease offer of 300 million dollars, 60 million more than prior replies. Soviet charge d'affaires Loris Karavaev presented it after a meeting with Frederick Reinhardt’s American delegation at the State Department. Reinhardt said the figure is unsatisfactory but the issue will be studied ahead of a new session next Thursday. The U.S. seeks about 800 million dollars to wind up the war loan, covering roughly 11 billion in American supplies to the Soviet Union.
FBI and Civil Aeronautics officials opened investigations into United Airlines DC-6B crash near Oakland California. Searchers recovered dozens of bodies amid hillside debris while relatives arrived to identify victims. The plane from Boston had stopped in Hartford Cleveland and Chicago before the fatal landing attempt.
More than 7,000 Korean War veterans arrive on the West Coast from Orient transports General John Pope and Marine Phoenix. Maryland troops include 60 on the Pope and 59 on the Phoenix, with furlough addresses listed for Frederick and Myersville servicemen.
Earl Bane of Leetown, employed by the State Road Commission, died from injuries after being gored by a bull during an incident when highway equipment broke through a fence releasing the animal. He fled for safety and was attacked. Officials reported the bull attack followed the equipment accident.
Detroit August 25 a suspect confessed to a brutal Belle Isle slaying of Robert McKenzie 55 a burglar with a police record. Jeffrey Davis 41 hitchhiked with an officer and later confessed to killing McKenzie whose body was found with a bashed head and throat injuries. Davis was jailed to face murder charges.
Geoffrey P. Baldwin 60 retired U S brigadier general and CARE director general fell or jumped to death from the sixth floor of CARE’s Rome office. A West Point 1916 graduate Baldwin earned the Distinguished Service Cross Silver Star and Victory Medal for World War I service. He was from Battle Creek Michigan.
San Francisco August 25 Admiral Chester W Nimitz called the mothball fleet the cheapest insurance for Americans. He spoke at recommissioning ceremonies for the USS Missouri describing the ship as a cost saving and time saver. The 45000 ton vessel carried FDR to Casablanca in 1943 and will be the fourth and last of its class to return to sea duty. Missouri New Jersey and Wisconsin already in commission.
General Ridgway sent a sharp message to top Red commanders accusing them of malicious falsehoods over Kaesong. He left the decision on resuming discussions to the Communists while reaffirming readiness to meet for an armistice if they lift the suspension.
U S F-86 Sabres of the Eighth Army air force fought near Sinuiju and Sinanju in northwestern Korea, shooting down MiG-15s with no Sabre losses. Thirty-five B-29s bombed marshalling yards near Rashin, with 400 enemy vehicles reported destroyed or damaged in road convoys around Kaesong.
In College Park on August 25 two Marylanders received top honors in the Dairy Herd Improvement Association 1950 contest. Harry O Harbaugh of Hagerstown earned the $50 and bronze plaque for efficient dairy production, while T Richard Betts, Baltimore County Supervisor, won for completeness of reports. About 40 attendees at the supervisors conference concluded today with guidance on new testing developments.
