Fred L. Bull, University of Maryland extension soil conservationist, told Maryland district conservationists at the three day Soil Conservation Service meeting in Frederick that conservation work is vital in critical times. He praised district supervisors for guiding soil and water programs in 23 districts and noted cooperation among agencies. The conference at the Francis Scott Key Hotel ended mid afternoon with additional talks on equipment and planning.

An explosion of a gas stove at Frederick Memorial Hospital late Thursday burned a cook named Ethel Fields. The incident caused a general alarm. no fire spread, and only the stove was damaged. Fields suffered first degree burns to face and arms. cause undetermined as to whether the stove was in use. Firefighters and police controlled the scene. a crowd dispersed after brief attention.
