Helena Wood Smith, a young artist, was found buried in sand a mile from her Carmel-by-the-Sea home. Death caused by strangulation. Japanese photographer George Korton confessed to fleeing after the body fell, claiming they quarreled at her bungalow on August 2. Friends led by Frederick Benchdolth located the body. a heavy cord was around the neck.
