Satellite changing face of TV
In December a 19 story Ariane missile will launch a 6000 pound Hughes Galaxy satellite into position 22300 miles up. The DBS system promises 300 channels initially with 18 inch dish and decoder kit for about 700 dollars, expanding to 500 channels. Forecasts expect 1 million subscribers first year and 16 million by decade end. DBS aims to undercut cable costs with about three dollars per home to deploy versus cable’s eight hundred to twelve hundred dollars.
