Heat Wave Paralyzes South Pulled by Front. 15 Dead
A fierce heat wave grips the South with 100 degree highs through the weekend. Schools dismiss early as students swelter, the elderly seek air conditioned shelters, crops wither, and thousands of chickens perish. Meteorologist Harry Gordon cites a front wandering along the Mason Dixon line as the culprit. Relief appears unlikely until at least the weekend. The nation’s hot spot is 107 degrees in Gila Bend Arizona, while Athens Georgia hits 105 in the region. Rain from Tropical Storm Barry may help but is not expected near major coastal cities before Thursday or Friday. Local storms bring 60 mph winds, power outages for 12,000, and a brief 11 degree drop in Jackson Tennessee. Nashville classrooms reach 98 in some non air conditioned rooms.
