Highball Impairs Performance

A study reported in the Journal of the American Medical Association tests the effects of a three ounce 100 proof bourbon highball with the antidepressant nortriptyline. Sixteen volunteers endured tests after alcohol, drug, both, or placebo, with stress via delayed playback of answers. Results show alcohol impaired most tests. nortriptyline showed little effect at 10 mg but some impairment at 25 mg on one test, with a general tendency to counteract alcohol. Researchers from Indiana University School of Medicine note no untoward reactions beyond those produced by each component alone.
