U S Soldier Seeks Asylum In Russia
A Polish-born U S soldier, Vladimir Sloboda, 33, deserted from Frankfurt after three weeks and sought asylum in the Soviet Union. Described as a linguist and clerk with limited security access, he led a section in Intelligence Group 513. His asylum statement blasted U S policy and cited U2 flights and agent smuggling as wartime prep. He left behind his wife Lilian and their three children in Frankfurt.
