Senate approves railroad bill boosting retirement benefits
The Senate voted 71 to 12 to approve a railroad bill increasing retirement payments to 5,908 retirees and dependents by 10 while expanding unemployment benefits and raising payroll taxes for rail workers. The measure moves to the House for action, with changes to employer and employee contributions and a higher tax base set for future increases. The bill also provides earlier unemployment enhancements and sets Jan 1, 1959 for certain payroll tax changes and Jan 1, 1963 for full increases. Separately, Tiny Tot Town hosted a color festival closing event with donations from the Frederick section of the National Council of Jewish Women.
