An advertisement extols Paine's Celery Compound as nourishing the nerves and rebuilding tissue. It claims to purify stagnant blood, improve digestion and organ function, and banish nervousness, despondency, and melancholia, delivering a vigorous, healthy life to the weak and sickly.
A mob of women organized at a house and marched to a saloon west of Nash, threw rocks, entered, and wrecked the place. The proprietor fled as bottles were broken and the establishment was razed, an act that followed days of disturbance at the site.

In Tamaqua Pa August 23 conflicting testimony marked the inquest into the death of Patrick Sharpe during a strike clash at Nesquehoning Monday. Witnesses largely blamed McKinnoyle for the fatal shot while five deputies claimed William Bonemus fired it. A verdict was pending with deputies body questioned at the stockade. deputy lieutenant Exekiel John was arrested yesterday on murder complicity charges and jailed in Mauch Chunk.
Kingston dispatch reports a sharp rise in Barbadoes smallpox cases with bodies discarded into the sea. Bridgetown has 1,876 cases since July 13. The Trent notes a deadly riot in British Guiana where Major, a Scot, was killed and 21 people died amid mob violence as troops fled.
A blaze started yesterday at the Catholic Protectory main building in Westchester. Insufficient water pressure left the structure in danger until the institution’s 50 member fire brigade plus arriving engines contained the flames. The fire spread to an upper dormitory but was extinguished after alarms. Damage is estimated at $10,000.
