Jackson Mississippi August 23 Governor Longino announced a treasury shortage after an August 15 count showed 677 846 on books totaling 810 468 a deficit of 162 621 Credit for due bills drafts 55 000 reduced the gap He planned another count on August 20 and the result sparked excitement Stowers declined comment
Miss Mary Dudley declares she is married to Michael Pyne a Mountain Express brakeman but he denies the union and she vanished after saying vows at New Hartford local entry lists no record. Pyne states he does not know her whereabouts and no marriage trace exists.
Philadelphia August 23 A report claims the Gould interests now control the Norfolk and Western stock, with the Pennsylvania railroad holding major but reduced stakes. The move aims to secure an Atlantic seaboard outlet, with Cassatt said to refuse any pact that harms Pennsylvania’s position. Gould plans to press for routing and freight moves via Pittsburg and Wabash connections, while Big Four agrees to long term Wabash access between Wellington and Cleveland.
Oyster Bay Aug 23 Columbia defeated the Constitution twice on the Seawanhaka triangular course. On corrected time the Columbia won by 3 minutes 5 seconds, elapsed time 1 minute 39 seconds, despite a close first leg where the margin was under a minute. Winds shifted, favoring Columbia as Constitution proved slower in light air.
Sir Thomas Lipton expressed complete satisfaction after Shamrock II’s 90 minute trial spin in New York harbor. In Denisonville Louisiana a boiler on a pump boat exploded killing two and injuring fourteen, after the pump man fell asleep.
A mob attacked after Walter Blankenship was killed and Arthur Blankenship wounded while trying to lynch Jim Brown, sentenced to hang for rape. Judge Pelham’s trial was described as swift and fair, Sheriff’s men defended the court as the mob lines broke. Brown fled to Birmingham then Atlanta before capture in Charleston, South Carolina.
